Deaf Beggers?

Posted by chillygurlz on December 30, 2007

Homeless deaf beggers? while I was visiting San Diego last Sept, me and my friend went down to del taco resturant for lunch.  as we were sitting down to eat our big burrito,  an deaf lady came up to us,  when i saw her, i noticed she was a homeless person and was holding those little paper cards that has finger spelling signs and it also says “i’m deaf”.  She was asking us for money cuz she was deaf and needed money for food for her and a dog.  at first i kinda felt sorry cuz she looked like she was homeless but at same time I felt she had no respect for herself and the deaf culture.  so i said sorry no can do.  in my mind i was like, what she was doing is insult to deaf community.   I was warned by the teachers for the deaf and other people about those deaf beggers.   tell me your opinions pls…

Being only deaf kid in a hearing family…

Posted by chillygurlz on December 22, 2007

I describe whats it like to be the only deaf kid in family when it comes to holidays.  it usually gets pretty lonely and kinda challenging to have a conversation with the family who speaks only and too time consuming to write back and forth with paper according to the family.  I also asked about CODA Interpreting for their deaf parents, is it alright or not?  in my personal opinion, it depends on the situation, if the CODA kid wanted to interpret for their deaf parent, then it would only be in stores or resturants, or something not too personal.  i would like ur responds from CODA ppl and anyone!!!

Transcript:   hello all…  I want to tell u my story about what it like to be the only deaf kid in a hearing family, when it comes to holidays like christmas, thanksgiving and family gatherings.  my parents divorced when i was 6 years old so i had 2 families to choose from for the holidays.  so me and my brothers had to go visit each family in the same day during christmas and thanksgiving, it was not easy cuz i wanted to spend a day with just one family.  so it meant more foods, desserts, and more traveling around.  when i am with my family, i tend to be lonely and kinda just sit in the corner and watch everyone but yes i do help around by picking up the food or setting the table or stuff like that so i had something to do.  when i try to talk to people, i kinda get stuck cuz i am not sure what they are talking about and i don’t want to interrupt an conversation.    so it just easier just to sit back and be quiet.   I always wished there was a deaf person or a sign buddy with me so i could chat and have a conversation.   When i am quiet and not really able to chat with the people in the family, i always felt like i did not belong to the family.  yes i can speak but its really hard to hear what people are saying.

You would have to be deaf to understand, term “nevermind”

Posted by chillygurlz on December 18, 2007

When i am having an conversation with a person who is hearing, if i needed them to repeat something, they would say “nevermind”, or “i’ll tell u later”. That is degrading, it makes me feel unimportant and i am sure alot of other deaf people feel the same way too…   link to the site,  http://deafness.about.com/b/2007/10/24/you-have-to-be-deaf-to-understand-never-mind.htm

Transcript:  Hello all…  its almost christmas time…  excited?  will santa come to ur house?  also i wanted to show u my Iowa school for the deaf shirt.  bobcat is the mascot for ISD.  today topic is term “nevermind”.  that the word we who are deaf, don’t like to hear from the hearing people.  when we are talking to someone who is hearing and don’t know anything about deaf.  when we ask someone to simply repeat or use paper and pen to tell us what they say.  They sudden say “oh nevermind or not important.  it makes us feel not important or they just don’t care.  most hearing people don’t realize how using term “nevermind”   makes us feel degraded, belittled.  Those hearing people should get in our “shoes” and be told nevermind all the time, and see how it feels.

My Pet peeves, deaf verison…

Posted by chillygurlz on December 7, 2007

I describe my pet peeves…

Transcript:   hello all…  today i was at the library volunteering..  today topic is pet peeves deaf verison…  I noticed when i am walking on the street, someone comes up, askes me a question but i did not understand what he or she said so i asked her or him to please repeat the question, they say “oh sorry” then just take off on me cuz i was deaf but i was also using my hearing aid too.  also when i say ”i can’t hear” then some people say, “oh i soo sorry”.  Some people just don’t understand us deafies, like how to converse with deaf people like using paper and pen or just simply repeating what they just said.   other pet peeve,  on tv, we use closed cartion to understand what people are saying.  on tv shows, if the tv guide said that show was suppose to have or normally have closed caption, i turn on the show and theres no closed caption at all or the captioning are all messed up with wording, so i have to miss the whole program just because of that.    also when u buy/rent dvd   movies, it said it would have closed caption on it but when i go to watch it, there are none.   sometimes when u ask someone to repeat something by voice, they either speak loudly, slowly, more quiet or babyish.  we are asking them to simply repeat words not change tone of voice.   other thing is, when u tell people your deaf, then they assume things like, “oh you can’t drive?” or other foolish things.  I am like, hey deaf people can do everything, only thing we can’t do is hear.  also i don’t like it when deaf people are called “hearing impaired”, we should just be called “deaf” or hard of hearing…  alright that all i can think of for pet peeves and i would like your opinions…

My hearing aid…

Posted by chillygurlz on December 5, 2007

I wear a hearing aid.  I am okay with them but there are pros and cons with them…  i been wearing them since i was 1 and half and yes i had times i would lose them or broke them.  i did go to bed with them on when i was little and i would lose them too.  I never had problems with ppl making fun of me with hearing aid so that was cool, some ppl mostly made fun of way i looked.    I have dropped one of my hearing aid in a lake once and lost it for good.

My memoriable best friend, Daisy…

Posted by chillygurlz on December 4, 2007

My friend Daisy Sipp, I known her since i was about 3 years old. i describe my friendship with her in video…

Hello…  I want to tell u about my bestest friend i have since i was about 3 years old from pre school in Lincoln, Nebraska.  Her name is Daisy…   I was in same school with her from pre school to 7th grade.  we were always good friends together.   She always helps me  when i need help or have problem.  She accepts me for who I am.  after our 7th grade in middle school, she and her family moved to Oregon.  so we did not see eachother very much anymore but still kept in contact through mail and e-mails.  we missed eachother too.  from our childhood years we always had good times together,  i always tend to go to her house  so i can interact with deaf family, since my family is all hearing.  me and Daisy and her siblings always made a haunting house and play school, Daisy was always the teacher.   we did alot of different things, we did girls scouts together,  played drums in band for school together.  I also go watch Daisy play soccer game sometimes too.  we help eachother with school work.   Today, we are still best friend and still keep in touch and visit eachother when we can.   we will be friends for life…  she is special friend to me.   she is sweet, outgoing, open mind,  and she is everything i want for a friend…  thanks and hope you enjoy the vlog…
