My Pet peeves, deaf verison…

I describe my pet peeves…

Transcript:   hello all…  today i was at the library volunteering..  today topic is pet peeves deaf verison…  I noticed when i am walking on the street, someone comes up, askes me a question but i did not understand what he or she said so i asked her or him to please repeat the question, they say “oh sorry” then just take off on me cuz i was deaf but i was also using my hearing aid too.  also when i say ”i can’t hear” then some people say, “oh i soo sorry”.  Some people just don’t understand us deafies, like how to converse with deaf people like using paper and pen or just simply repeating what they just said.   other pet peeve,  on tv, we use closed cartion to understand what people are saying.  on tv shows, if the tv guide said that show was suppose to have or normally have closed caption, i turn on the show and theres no closed caption at all or the captioning are all messed up with wording, so i have to miss the whole program just because of that.    also when u buy/rent dvd   movies, it said it would have closed caption on it but when i go to watch it, there are none.   sometimes when u ask someone to repeat something by voice, they either speak loudly, slowly, more quiet or babyish.  we are asking them to simply repeat words not change tone of voice.   other thing is, when u tell people your deaf, then they assume things like, “oh you can’t drive?” or other foolish things.  I am like, hey deaf people can do everything, only thing we can’t do is hear.  also i don’t like it when deaf people are called “hearing impaired”, we should just be called “deaf” or hard of hearing…  alright that all i can think of for pet peeves and i would like your opinions…

    Rita,

I have go through over and over about hearing people did come and put difficult time with you or related to the deafness and after hear your voice is “deaf accent” sometime the people have not heard a deaf voice before. it is so strange!

I agree with you that some people say to me Are you hearing impaired and I have to remind them that I am not hearing impaired. Just DEAF!
I complete understood how so frustrated with hearing people don’t really understand. Close Captions We are very rebaible with C.C.
They think it is not for as similar to Subtitle.
As similiar you mention you have a noonan sydromenes and It is really interested to me, but teenager kids would not understand about it. it is kind of similiar other kids go through similiar with their disabitiy. I feel bad and hope you doing well soon.

Rita - also I get very GRRR when hearing person realizes I am Deaf, they start TALKING IN MY EAR!!!! :-(

  3. Bill Says:

How do hearing people learn these things? I had no deaf people in my life until I met someone at the gym. And you have to feel comfortable to ask questions! My friend at the gym is so good at speaking and reading lips, that I did not realize he was deaf for quite a while. I assumed hearing loss and/or possible mild speech impediment.

It takes a lot of understanding on both sides for things to get better.

Sorry for defending hearing people (”my people”)on a deaf person’s blog, especially when I don’t read sign all that well yet. I only understood that you were talking about CC at movies (the theatre that I work for has a couple of MoPix RW captioned auditoriums) and hearing people not understanding deafness (guilty as charged).

I commend you for speaking your mind - perhaps if you can subtitled it for the signing-impaired, it can help some ignorant hearing person to understand?

Understanding people who are different, culturally, or physically, should be
    #1 a parent’s job, and
#2 part of a normal “social studies” curriculum at any school.

If I have misunderstood, I apologize, and hope you will forgive me. As I learn more ASL, my understanding will be clearer.

  4. Bill Says:

(btw, I can help with subtitling, if you provide transcript)

  6. Jean Boutcher Says:

Rita, I can perfectly well understand your frustrations. Some hearing people have the misconception about hearing aids. They vastly decide that a person with a hearing aid can hear and speak. Myself, I have encountered thousands and a hearing person who would keep talking after I gesture that I am mute. The problem is that I have a Peter Pan hair do — hard to hide my bi-aural hearing aids. Wearing long hair would solve that problem, but never for the life of me would I wear long hair to hide my aids FOR THEM. No way!

Jean,  i am deaf but can speak…. with my hearing aids i can usually understand (well known like my mom and family and friends) ppl speaking sometimes but when it someone i don’t know, i can’t understand them cuz i don’t know their voice.  I have a hard time with mens voice mostly but with women voice is easy for me to understand depending on a person and their voice. i can also read ppl’s lips too. I don’t hide my hearing aids either.

  8. chillygurlz Says:

also Jean, pls do not use term Mute next time… u can say “i don’t speak” that ok…
