My love with fixer upper houses and route 66

Posted by chillygurlz on January 8, 2008

I talk about my interests… I love checking out things about route 66, “the mother road” and checking out the “lost buildings” on the internet and the book. I love comparing before and after picture of things like buildings on route 66 and houses. I also love looking at fixer upper houses and houses that need work and haunted houses, I love checking them out. Thought I would never live in a fixer upper house. What about you guys? Do u like checking out haunted houses or fixer uppers houses? How about route 66? Any stories??       here the link to information about Route 66, the mother road,

    Hi Rita

I am blessed to be able to fix up our 100 years old house here in Virginia. This house we are living was built between 1905 to 1915 and it is called Craftsman Bungalow.

This house is currently undergoing renovation as I am writing this to you. I hired two contractor friends and they have just finished replaced with new windows, new doors and just finished front porch to match style of Craftsman house just like it was 100 years ago.

Tomorrow the electrian is rewiring the whole house and our contractor friends will start to tear down bathroom and then rebuild new bathroom. Can you image going to bathroom and shower in 100 years old bathroom? Ick!

So, in our progress of fixing up this house, I am trying very hard in preserving everything like it was 100 years old and I have been researching on the internet like DIY, This Old House, Flip this house etc to look at Craftsman Bungalow homes and copy the style and colors to match our house. Also, on TV shows called “Flip this house” is excellent source of info in old homes and it has helped me alot when we’re fixing up this house.

I found out that the old glass door knobs that you see in very very old homes are selling in EBay for 30 dollars EACH and several of our friends asked us if we plan to replace door knobs in our house and give to them.

I said NOPE! I am keeping it! Smile.

Wow, I have found few old stuff that was hidden during renovation and found lots of beautiful wood, beautiful old materials like door hinges, old wood frame with beautiful wood underneath several coats of paint, etc and they were in pretty decent shape so we clean it up and restore old stuff. For example, three weeks ago, I hired contractor to fix the driveway with bulldozer to groom the driveway then pour new gravel. Guess what we found? The bull dozer hit something hard under the dirt and we found 2′ by 2′ old stepping stones and each weights 75 lbs. I was jumping up and down with joy because I love old stepping stone so the bulldozer found 4 old stepping stones and pulled it up and put aside.

When weather warms up, we will use this stepping stone for our front yard to create path from driveway to front porch.

I figured we will be finished with this renovation by late Spring/early Summer after we applied with new coat of fresh paint.

As for Route 66, it is long and old history. I have been watching movies, read books about it. Currently I am researching about riding motorcycle on Route 66 from ILL to California and found that deaf bikers are working on planning riding that route. See this website about it. They plan to ride that route in 2009

My boyfriend Fred and I are Harley Davidson bikers and we love old houses, love riding old routes that was used 50 to 100 years ago if road still stands.
