Space camp for the deaf!!!

Posted by chillygurlz on March 24, 2008

How would you like to go to space camp? would it be fun? well i had alot of fun and i went there twice. Program is about a week long camp, we usually went in the Spring.

In the year of 1998 and 1999 I and my other friends from Nebraska school for the deaf went to Huntsville, Alabama to a Space Camp program for the deaf. They provide the program for deaf kids once a year for a week.

here a link about space camp deaf program…http://www.spacecamp.com/category.php?cat=Deaf
Here are some pictures of me at Space camp…my favorite thing was doing an space walk as you can see the 4th picture on the right…

here is my story i wrote back in 1998 about my experience at Space camp…
What I did at Space Camp By Rita
On Saturday, April 4th 1997, I went to Omaha to get on a plane at 4:03P.M. We landed in Dallas at 5:50P.M. When we got off the plane. We went on the subway train. I have never been on a subway before. When we got on the train I thought it was fun. The people who went to Space Camp was a Teacher, and 3 other kids. When we were in a Dallas, Texas airport, it was huge like a mall. We left Dallas at 8:33P.M.

We landed in Huntsville, Alabama on April 5th at 11:03P.M.. It was fun flying on a plane, it was my first time. We slept in a hotel for the night. The next day April 5th, We woke up at 8:30A.M. to get ready for the day. We ate breakfast at 10:15A.M. At 11:30A.M., we went swimming till 1:45P.M.. When I went swimming I got sunburned. At 2:30 p.m.

we went to Space Camp to sign up for Space Camp. Thiokol was my team name. The word means a device that listens to you heart. Before we got to see our team, we had to go on a tour to see the place. That way we would know our way if we get lost. On the tour we went on the Space Shot. Space Shot is like how it feels to go up like a rocket. It was fun. We got to see our group at 6:00PM. I got to go on to the 1/6 chair. It is the one that you can see how high we can jump on the moon.

We went to bed at lO:OOP.M. I had a hard time sleeping because I woke up every two hours because it was very cold in the room. The bed felt like it was unbalanced. It felt hard, I didn’t like it. It didn’t feel good. I was not used to hard beds and cold rooms. The next day, April 7th, I woke up at 4:30A.M. just laying on the bed till lights were on. The lights went on at 6:45A.M. Finally I got up to get ready for the day. We went to eat breakfast at 8:00A.M. We did a lot of things everyday. Our team leaders treated us like astronauts. We had a lunch at 12:00P.M. and dinner at 6:00P.M. The food we ate was little bit gross. My favorite food at the café room was hash browns. On Wednesday we got our pictures taken for Space Camp. We went swimming on Thursday for two hours. They did two activities. One was to build a cube really fast. The other one was to show you how it felt to fall in water when you are in the water and you need to get in to the boat. We swam from 9:00 to 11:OOA.M. My favorite ride was on the MARS van. It was the simulator that will make you think you are really going to places but you are not. I loved the wild ride on the river. They have IMAX theater. It huge it is shape like earth. When you go in you feel weird. One movie was called Cosmic voyage. It was interesting.By the time you get up there you will be able to get on the rocket and go to the 9 different planets. You should not get out yet because you are not ready yet to walk on these planets. It’s a good idea to walk on these planets when you go up in space for the second time.On my mission control I was a scientist. I had to check make sure my experiments work well. It did work. My mission landed successfully. I had mission testing on April 9th. The time was 3:00P.M. I made a rocket on April 8th. I did good making the rocket. The rocket went up in the sky on April 11th, it wasn’t bad but one string broke off. It went down to fast. The muiti axis training was very fun. It spinned in many different directions. It doesn’t make you dizzy. The 5DF chair is kind of boring because it like riding in a wheel chair and you push the button.I liked the space museum because it has alot of cool stuffs. They tell you about the past, present and future. They have copy of Apollo 13 rocket. You can go in the rocket to see how it feels to be in it. On training floor I saw mission control computers, 5 big rockets for kids to practice in, 1/16 chair to see how high you can jump on the moon, 5DF chair, MARS MISSION UNIT, Mars van, The huge water tank it is 40 feet deep and it for astronauts to practice in. The training floor is only for kids and staff who ever is from space camp are allow in training floor. If public people go in the room the might go to jail or pay fme for breaking the rules.

On Friday, the 11th, we had graduation at 9:00A.M. for Space camp to ‘go one level up. We went on a plane at 2:30P.M. to 4:00P.M. to go to Dallas. We had to wait till 5:30P.M. to leave Dallas to Omaha. We arrive Omaha at 9:30P.M. We were late because of foul weather.

The End

Internet V.S. Libraries

Posted by chillygurlz on March 23, 2008

Hello all…  Happy Easter to you all…  enjoy your Easter egg hunt…  my topic is,  what the differences between Library and Internet?  similarity are, they have encyclopedia,  Information, read, watch movies, on the computer and you socialized with people.  Internet is a cyber library.  Differences,  at library, u don’t get e-mails but on internet you do get e-mails.  internet have social networks, chatrooms while at library u have to be shhh.  internet is open 24/7, library has certain times they are open.  library is a building while internet is on computer.  internet, get information fast while at library u might have to wait on information cuz the book might not be there so it slower.   library, can see ppl in person while on internet, u can’t unless u use webcam.  I know some libraries today are losing more customers cuz of internet.   same with tv, more ppl are on internet more then watching tv…  internet is the best thing that happened to us…  I still go to library to get books and volunteer, i love libraries still…  oh oh and deaf people can communicate loudly in libraries by signing while hearies cannot speak loudly hehe…  thanks for watching my vlog…

What’s going on?

Posted by chillygurlz on March 17, 2008

Hello all…  hope you all had a nice week…  last week i was kinda busy.  I just got my hair trim last Friday, it came out nice, i am planning to grow it long.  know what happened last week when i was calling to make an appointment for haircut?  I called using relay, the other person who pick up phone, they said “this is a business and i don’t have time for this call” then hung up.  I was like, whoaa so i had to try again and call back.  has this ever happen to you when you try call on relay?  I also enjoy my volunteer work at the library last week, Thurs.  Guess what?  on April 12th until May 12th  I will be taking a trip to Nebraska to visit my family and friends.  which means no vlogs from me for a month but maybe a blog one time during that month i am in Nebraska.  also other reason i am going, is cuz my dad been having a tough times with his life at the moment so i need to go support him.  he just went through a divorce with his ex-wife couple years ago,  not my mother.  His ex is now stalking him, possably trying to burn down his house and trying to hurt him.  here the link about story about my dad’s house almost being burned down,  http://www.journalstar.com/articles/2008/02/17/news/local/doc47b7175166d05903593494.txt  so it makes my dad feel really down, so i thought i would go and visit him and visit everyone else too.  My grandparent’s health are not doing very well so i wanted to go visit them as much as possible.   my grandpa has heart problem and my grandma has polio disease since she was very young.  here the link about polio disease,   she can’t walk but can move her upper body part.   http://www.dhpe.org/infect/polio.html

I have some interesting news to share with you…  there one story about one women who sat on a toliet seat for 2 years, she never moved.  her skin grew onto the toliet seat.  can you imgaine sitting on toliet seat for 2 years? odd, i do not know why she did it.  would you be bored?  I would never want to do that.  here the link about the story.  http://www.kansascity.com/news/breaking_news/story/527676.html

WHOAAAA….  one of news, in Gorda, California,  The gas price is $5.20 per gallon, yikes.  i bet people were avoiding driving.  here the link about that,  http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080315/ap_on_fe_st/odd_expensive_gas;_ylt=Ak55zVOlzJE8OAfs1q0aw2jtiBIF

cool those were some interesting news i have found.  I have a question for you all,  Would you take a chance to take off, go live off land, get away from civilizations, cities and people, live on nature’s food and hunt for your food and live in forest area where it soo pretty?  would you do what Chris Mccandless did, he took off and hitchhike and walked cross country and went to Alaska and lived off land?  unfortunately he did not live cuz he never really planned well and did not bring enough supplies.  here the link to his story, http://outside.away.com/outside/features/1993/1993_into_the_wild_1.html

Yes he was kinda stupid about not planning ahead or thinking ahead.

If i had skills, knowledge, I would try take chance go live off land for short term in a pretty mountain area.  But I don’t have the knowledge or skills to do it so i am better off just going camping with friends or family for the weekend.

thanks for watching my vlog…

Hey! your talking to me directly!!!

Posted by chillygurlz on March 9, 2008

Hello all…  (showing dog)  tell him for me, he’s soo cute…  yesterday Saturday,  i had a good day at garage sales, i walked to all different 20 garage sales, and it was windy and chilly, plus i walked from 7:30am until 10am checking out those garage sales…  I did find few things i wanted…

I was just thinking…  I thought up about using relay and VRS and interpreters, by law they must tell you every exact word the other person is saying.  sometimes when your talking to person using relay or interpreter,  when a person says. “tell her or tell him i will call back or tell her how are you?”  it can get annoying.   of course relay operator must say exact way the person saying which is not a problem.  the problem is, when you see person saying “tell him or tell her”  that not really talking to you directly.    It makes me feel like i am lower person then the person i am speaking to and i also feel like i am not really speaking to the person.  i can speak for myself.   we just have to teach them that they do not need to say “tell her or tell him” to the relay operators or interpreter cuz they already know to tell the other person what the other person on line is saying.  Some hearing people do not realize operators do say every word they are saying.   that also is a pet peeve alot of us have too…    so what should we do to deal with that issue?   either we intuppert the relay operator or interpreter and explain to hearing person, they do not need to say “tell her or tell him” cuz operator already knows to tell the person what they have to say.   so tell me your feelings about this issue?   oh and yesterday at one of garage sale, a person try to speak to me but i did not hear so i say sorry i did not hear ya, i am deaf,  then the person back up and say “oh i soo sorry”  i was wearing my hearing aid  so i heard it and on the inside of me i felt like ”argh annnooyying to me and i hate hearing it”  but i did not want to say anything and stir things up.  so i just moved on to other things.  thanks for watching my vlog…

Into the wild and yard sales…

Posted by chillygurlz on March 7, 2008

Hello all…  today friday, March 7, we are under tornado watch for our area all day…  we mostly got alot of rain and lighting here.  I also wanted to remind you all, on sunday, March 9th, make sure you set your clocks an hour forward cuz it a daylight saving…    I also watched a movie called,  “Into the wild”,  it was pretty good movie.  it a true story too.   other thing, i wanted to talk about yard sales.   I enjoy checking out garage sales or yard sales…   I sometimes find cool things on good deals like cool clothes for a real good deal.  even i enjoy garage sales, i don’t really like hosting my own garage sales, too much work lol…  at yard sales, i like to see what kind of things people have and sometimes u can tell what kind of people they are by looking at what they have at their yard sales.  sometimes people will try charge you tooo much for a used item that should be an dollar, instead of 8 dollars.  it can also be other way around where they charge low price for an item that worth alot more.   on saturday, March 8th, my neighborhood are having huge yard sales all over, about 30 of them, so i will have fun checking them out on saturday…  thanks for watching my vlog…

Here the plot i found on IMDB about “Into the wild”  movie

A young man leaves his middle class existence in pursuit of freedom from relationships and obligation. Giving up his home, family, all possessions but the few he carried on his back and donating all his savings to charity Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch) embarks on a journey throughout America. His eventual aim is to travel into Alaska, into the wild, to spend time with nature, with ‘real’ existence, away from the trappings of the modern world. In the 20 months leading up to his Great Alaskan Adventure his travels lead him on a path of self-discovery, to examine and appreciate the world around him and to reflect on and heal from his troubled childhood and parents’ sordid and abusive relationship. When he reaches Alaska he finds he has been insufficiently prepared for the hardships to come. Despite making it through the winter his plan is ill-judged and prepares to return home in spring, only to find the stream he crossed in the snow has become an impassable raging torrent and that he is trapped. With no means of sustaining himself adequately he eventually starves to death in his so sought after isolation. Throughout his epic journey the people he meets both influence and are influenced by the person he is and bring him to the eventual and tragic realisation that “Happiness is only real when shared”.

Actually, he did not live through the winter here in Alaska. He set out on the trail in April and died in August. In winter the trail he walked in on is covered with many feet of snow. He died during the summer, when the rivers are full of fish and the sun is always out. For anyone who wants to know what really happened just check out “The call of the Wild”, into the wild de-bunked. This is a good film that tells the truth. It appeared here in Alaska a few months ago and the real people in the film were in attendance. Chris McCandless did a lot of things that Sean Penn left out. Hollywood evidently sees what it wants to see.

A 6 years old kid suspended from school because of a haircut!!!

Posted by chillygurlz on March 4, 2008

this newspaper i read,  interesting,  in Ohio, some elementary school,  suspended a 6 years old kid for getting a haircut,  it a silly thing for the school to do beside he is only 6 years old, other kids don’t care about what you do with your hair.  school said, the hair was too distracting for other kids in school.  in school book for policies, there no statement about what kind of haircut your allow to have or anything.  it only has rules about clothes or uniforms.  kids should be able to have their haircuts however they want it, it expresses their feelings, personality…

In schools today,  with sports and games like tag, hide seek and competitive games during recess time and after school playtime,  schools are slowly banning all those fun childhood games,  I hear those stories where a parent sue school cuz a kid was playing tag and got scape on their knee, which is normal as a kid, we go out and have fun and play hard and sometimes scape our knees alittle.    i can kinda understand schools worry about parents who are happy to sue school for allow kids to have fun playing games outside.  No it not fun to get hurt but it is part of being a kid and learning to deal with things if u get hurt or lose or win.  when i was a kid, i was a lousy player for tag or hide and seek and other sports but i still played those games with my friend, yeah i got hurt alittle but i dealt with it and kept playing.  i love playing basketball, soccer and other sports even i can’t really play well.  I would be one of those who ended up sitting on bench during whole game which is no fun.    so what are your opinions about schools and games???  are they being too strict or over protective??  they might as well put plastic bubble wrap on the kids all day if the schools don’t want them to play fun games…  that would be no fun.

What not to do in your vlogs?

Posted by chillygurlz on March 2, 2008

6 mins and 17 seconds long video… Hello all… In 2 weeks, march 17 is ST Patrick day so be sure to wear green or else u would get pinched. Enjoy your cabbage and cornbeef dinners on ST Patrick day…

Keep in mind, I am not pointing at anyone at all, this is just my opinion and just being silly of what I think is a bad vlogging. Today’s topic is, I will give you some funny, some serious examples of being a bad vlogger… Eating while vlogging, being forgetful, akward and not editing it out, in other words, practice vlogging before u publish it. Talking on the phone and vlogging, camera set in wrong spot, make sure ur camera is set in right place for us to see, smoking and vlogging, disgusting lol… Copycat other vlogger like stealing someone’s sign trademark on their vlogs. Making fun of sign language, by making up fake signs. Vlogging and looking at the time u been vlogging. Doing repeats of saying same thing u already said 3 or 4 times. Distraction of things happening around you like tv on or bright light on while vlogging. Saying I am soo bored or “I don’t know what to say” while vlogging can turn off ppl from watching your vlogs.. Don’t be doing 2 or more things while vlogging at same time. Cleaning your ears or brushing your teeth while vlogging, tsk tsk… Drinking while vlogging. Putting on make up while vlogging unless your showing someone how to put on make up then it okay… Giving out your or others personal information is wrong, insulting others and putting down other vloggers is wrong. Cyberbully is flat ut wrong too. Example one time someone was complain about Geo’s captions, well hey that his personal choice. So in one word, RESPECT all other ppl and vlogger’s work too. Saying umm umm or soo soo soo repeatly on vlog can get kinda annoying. Wearing thick gloves while signing can be hard to see signs. Combing your hair on vlog unless your showing someone how to do something. Clipping your nails on vlog. Showing off your feet on vlog. Vlogging with camper’s hair (morning messy hair). Those are all my silly showing of bad vlogging. Thank you for watching my vlog…
